Tell Your Tale, Little Bird

Film screening and collective reading with Yumna Al-Arashi

Tell Your Tale, Little Bird

A film by Arab Loutfi

Palestine, 2007, 90’, AR/e

Tell your tale, Little Bird is a documentary about Palestinian women fighters, filmed in 1993. It recounts the experiences of seven Palestinian women involved in the national liberation struggle, including their experience of arrest and imprisonment. These women took part in the military struggle of the Palestinian people back in the sixties and seventies. Through their tales, we understand what made these women the symbols of their people’s fight.

“The peculiarity of my film is in a confident, unapologetic and even proud female narrative. A narrative that tells about the history that shaped the dream of the seventies generation, at a time when the currently prevailing documentation schools are trying to obliterate the spirit of this experience. The film confirms the presence of the memory of the resistance and its penetration into the depth of the female self, its spread through oral literature, and its continuation as a political act. The film provided an internal reading of the experience of these women (their feelings, emotional memory, and reasoning).” – Arab Loutfi

✦ Reading: Looking For A Hero: Alternatives To Houthi Anti-imperialism In Yemen, Yumna Al-Arashi, published in The Funambulist, 2024.

Yumna Al-Arashi is a Yemeni-Egyptian-American artist working with both still and moving images. Her practice critically reflects on the ways in which images shape the world we live in. Her first monograph, Aisha, will be published by Edition Patrick Frey in Autumn 2024. In her text, Looking For A Hero: Alternatives To Houthi Anti-imperialism In Yemen, she writes about the historical framework regarding Yemeni politics, the Yemeni dedication to the Palestinian struggle, in dialogue with other forms of anti-imperialist practices, in particular through the paintings of her aunt, Elham Al-Arashi.

Film/BookClub is a series of screenings and readings by Les Complices* that focuses on feminist perspectives of the Palestinian struggle in relation to other international solidarity movements and liberation struggles. The series is a collaboration with other artists, groups, and spaces across Zürich. It was inspired by our friends and comrades, who have been relentlessly organising reading groups and film clubs over the last few months to create shared spaces for watching, reading, collective discussions and coming together.
