Les Complices* is a self-organised, independent feminist art space for all, that centres queer and BIPoC perspectives. Located in Zurich, the space has existed for 20 years and has a rich legacy of critical and reflective artistic engagement. Through our programme of exhibitions, speculative fabulations, readings, listenings, publications, cooking events or gatherings, Les Complices*  is a space to explore and perceive art in expansive ways. Projects and events initiated and hosted by Les Complices* aim to create space for communal learning, sharing, exchange, discourse and experimentation.

Space / People / Structure

Les Complices* was initiated in 2002 by Jean-Claude Freymond-Guth as Les Complices* Espace Libre & Edition. Together with Simone Gerber and Ana Strika, he founded the association of the same name in 2002. From 2007 - 2014 Andrea Thal ran the space. From 2015 to 2017 Gökçe Ergör and Martina Baldinger ran the space. Since 2018 Gökçe Ergör and Reem Kadhum aka the Janitor were responsible for the program. In 2023, a new curatorial team continued the space in the hands and hearts of Kay Zhang, Paloma Ayala, Thi My Lien Nguyen, Engy Mohsen, tracy september and Trinity Njume-Ebong.

The current curatorial team is Kay Zhang, Paloma Ayala, Thi My Lien Nguyen, Engy Mohsen, tracy september.

The space and office are situated on the ground floor of a housing association building at Anwandstrasse 9 in Zurich’s Kreis 4 district. Unfortunately, Les Complices* is not wheelchair accessible. However, access can be arranged upon request via email notice.

Publications

Between 2008 and 2011 Les Complices* published a series of newspaper based publications in collaboration with the Zurich based publishing house edition fink. The publisher is also a close partner of the space for numerous other publication project.

Graphic Design

Close and long term collaborations with graphic designers are an important element of Les Complices*. The 2015 Les Complices* program posters are designed by Nadja Zimmermann. In the past years posters, fanzines and brochures have been designed by Caro Cerbaro and Roger Conscience (2013), Anna Frei (2010 – 2012), Philippe Desarzens (2007 – 2009), Marie Lusa and Urs Lehni (2004 – 2005), as well as various other accomplices. If you would like to receive the printed Les Complices* programs by Mail, please check the Complicard options in the right column.

Website

The current Les Complices* website was developed in close collaboration with Erica Preli, participant at Werkplaats Typografie / ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (Concept / Design) and Thijs Gadiot (Programming).

Alongside information about the ongoing and upcoming program the website contains a "recollect" section that allows visitors to search and discover a vast archive of material indexed under a variety of search terms and listings. The new website assembles pages with information on events, exhibitions and projects from the past ten years of Les Complices*. Besides text material, each entry now contains images in a considerably larger size, as well as relevant links and downloads. Exhibitions and events as well information on the structure of Les Complices* from 2002 – 2006 are collected on the respective year lists. An additional search function allows text searches in these pages as well as throughout the site. All pages are in the language originally written (mostly German) and, if available, translations can be accessed through the language menu on the top left of the text field. The website also now contains "context" pages which are intended as a tool to collect material for ongoing research. In the future, the launch of such a page will be announced by a mail-out.

This website was made to mark ten-year anniversary of Les Complices* and was released in late August 2013. The project was realised with the support of Fachstelle Kultur Kanton Zürich and Stadt Zürich Kultur.

A previous website, designed by A.W. the illegitimate daughter of Jackie Chan, was online from 2003 until summer 2013.
